Subject: copy of letter Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2008 11:48:11 -0800 i enthusiastically support the council's decision to discourage marine recruitmnet in our city. war has no place in a planet which is rushing toward the brick wall of arctic ice melt and the drastic consequences about to occur. the national treasure spending priorities need to be reversed immediately. it is by small local actions such as discouraging the recruiting station here that the national consciousness can be raised, and the bellicose policies of this government can be countered.

Dear Berkeley City Council,
I want to thank you for your courage and integrity in voting to remove the military recruitment center from Berkeley. I live in a dominant regressive right-wing community in Illinois and find it difficult to make any impact with so few like-minded people in the area. I applaud you for your strength and not backing down in expressing your right to free speech. Children need to be protected from what I consider harrassment to join the military and I find it outrageous that school funding is connected in any way to allowing these vultures to prey on students. I hope one day to live in an area with progressive individuals making a difference locally and nationally for others to follow the same path as is your community. Stay strong and keep up the good work!

Subject: World Can't Wait I completely support the resolution of "World Can't Wait" supporters who have declared the Marine Corps Recruiting Center to be "unwelcome" in Berkeley. Please ignore the right wing blogosphere and the completely biased Fox News who are mobilizing to force the city to back down. The Senator from South Carolina who is calling for Berkeley to lose all federal funding should be ashamed of himself, and personally apologize. The council member who is receiving death threats should get media attention, and police protection. This IS America right? We do still have some rights, and possibly the right to free speech? Please do not let these people sway you from protecting what is left of the Constitution.

Support from me to you concerning the refusal of recruitment offices Subject:
remaining any longer. To: sf@worldcantwait.org Hello City Council, Mayor of Berkeley, California and W.C.W..
My name is XXXXXXX and I am, among many other things, a student at HSU in Arcata. However I am originally from the East Bay Area and plan on residing there after the completion of my studies in the University. I've heard of an additional recent political struggle concerning the Marines' recruitment office situated in Berkeley and apparently, consciously without welcome from the people and city government. It is with great passion and fervor that I support everyone who supports this notion that they are not welcome and should respectfully pack up and leave. But when they do, where do they go to unpack and start their web slingin' again? Maybe this isn't Berkeley's concern? Also, are you, the city officials strategizing as to how we will deal and hold accountable the police officers who commit brutality during these events? I'll tell you right now, there presence IS being questioned. They are not necessary in the pulic assembly process as we are a PEACEFUL, capable and creative people sharing in a common struggle.
We should be clear in our dialogue together as to why each of us feel they [the militant recruiters] should leave in the first place. In who's intrest would it work if they were to remain or not. Maybe we feel it's because we don't need yet another facist, parasitic force targeting our social wealth, the men and womyn who are in line to throw their lives away in the name of "God" or the "U.S.A." but really their blood goes towards advancing the white supremist capitalist patriarchial agenda that has been raping this Indigenous land for a while now. Maybe we don't like how militarism targets, subjects and manipulates our men and womyn of color and/or who are poor/queer etc.? This needs to be articulated in public and private inclusive discussions. A clear and critical language will illustrate to folks in the process of getting engaged, just where they might be able to fit or stand in this current struggle and how it applies to them, their lives and that of their families. Some poeple are privileged enough to choose whether they want to even "get involved" in this or not but this is not the case for many. Let us not just be satisfied with the prevalent and superflous testimony of the white males in higher positions of power when talking about strategies for what we should do about this current situation, but open up a dialogue with the larger community so that various voices who have been institutionally silenced will be encouraged to voice their perspective. (i.e. that of a person of color, queer, low income/homeless/unemployed, womyn, womyn of color). This is not to say that anyone who speaks from any or all of said marginalized groups will for that reason alone, have the revolutionary, politically transgressive answer. But each member of the community, our social wealth, as Angela Davis has termed it, including you all, would bring an amount of incredible experience and wisdom along with some ingnorance. Thus the need to listen to other folks right now is more urgent than it's even been as these days progress. ALL the people of Berkeley (and beyond), again, the social wealth to which we all belong, is who we're defending when we raise our fist and say "No Business as Usual", "Ya Basta!"[Enough!]
In conclusion, a key point that I refuse to leave out is that the war in Iraq, that many of us are opposed to, should not take the attention off of the low intensity warfare that is going on at home, in the states. The war on people indigenous to this land, yet without papers who struggle to survive here and not get profiled by a cop. The war on womyn with us having to plan out our day each morning as to how we'll go about this one without getting raped. The war on people of color and with everything culturally telling everyone that "white has always been right, therefore, of course you're going to jail!". The war on Queers, with us having to struggle everyday with the notion that we are just a bit less authentically human then everyone else and walking around knowing that wearing a rainbow is still enough these days to get killed in the street. The war on poor people esp. those who are womyn and/or of color. Why haven't we legalized poverty yet?
I thank you all very much for taking the time to read this. As my hopes are to always challenge myself and everyone else i'm engaging with and talking to, I am openly in support of the recruitment office being shut down. Thank you. ~XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

sf@worldcantwait.org Dear members of the Berkeley City Council, I am writing in support of your decision to dis-invite the Marine recruiting office from Berkeley. I feel that this is not based on disrespect for the brave members of the armed forces who protect our country, but on a rejection of the policies of their leaders, who have sacrificed soldiers in an unjust war and who have encouraged and even forced them to commit reprehensible acts of torture.
I know you will face pressure for this decision, and I wanted you to know that people from across the nation respect your position and wish you well.

What you and your city council have done is so admirable and so courageous. People are searching desperately for leaders like yourselves to begin tapping into their own courage. If I had the way and means I would be there in person to support you. We need to fight back against these criminals and crazy folk that have hi-jacked this country through fear and took us into this illegal war/occupation, brought death and destruction to our soldiers, the Iraqis and their country and anyone else who gets in our way, like Iran. And in this free falling economy, many young people will need money and jobs and it makes it so easy for the military to seduce them. Please hang tough, you have much support.

Honorable Mayor Bates and City Council
We are writing to you today to thank you for telling the U.S. Marines that its Shattuck Square recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders,"
At no other time in American history has the democratic republic of our founding fathers been under such virulent attack from within our own national government. You all have shown great wisdom and courage in meeting this threat head on.
Your roles in this fight mean so much because you have both a platform from which to take action and also the unique opportunity to be heard over the dull silence of our media. The inclusion of the freedom of press in our constitution was meant as a buffer against the very oppression we now face. The only expression of freedom of the press we now have, save a few Truth Sayers, is in complete collusion with the power structure they are supposed to be monitoring.
Please stay strong in your vigilance and in the decisions you make on behalf of your citizenry. Your example is a guiding light to the millions of national and international citizens who support your efforts on behalf of an America we dare not lose to the conquerors.
Remain true, do the right thing. We support you!
Respectfully,

Your Honor,
I am aware of and support the Berkeley City Council vote to allow the peace group Code Pink to protest in front of the Shattuck Avenue Marine recruiting station.
So I don't understand why at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 Berkeley police in riot formation appeared, arresting the protesters who now face court appearences.
I believe the best way to support our military is to withdraw them from Iraq. The Iraq situation can't be resolved in a just way using our military at this point. Terrorism is a criminal act, not an act of war by a sovereign nation. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. We were misled into war with Iraq regardless of the brutality of the Sadam Husein regime. We did not belong there in 2002, and we don't belong there now.
I commend the resolution of your city council. I would like to know who broght charges against this legal protest, and hope the charges against the Code Pink protesters will be dropped and the harassment will not be repeated.
Sincerely, Thomas Meacham

I am writing to say that I support your sentiments regarding recruiting in Shattuck Sqare. As far as I can tell, you are simply stating they are unwelcome and saying it in a very public way. I don't believe this is against any laws as you are not actually "throwing them out," and are merely showing your strong sentiments against war that is obviously supported by your constituents. I believe, like you, we have to find other ways to deal with our aggression and our "world issues."
The crimes this administration has gotten away with, and continues to get away with, make a sham of our Constitution and our commitment to the rule of law. They commit real crimes every day and then get off scot-free by legalizing their crimes after the fact. The actions you took were actually supported by your City Council prior to making them. While I do not usually answer calls from World Can't Wait which I consider too far out, I do support your action in attempting to restrict Marine or any other military recruitment in your city. These recruiters do not give young people an accurate picture of the treatment they face in the military, dwelling mostly on the benefits of military service. Granted there have been many which has made it easy to convince them to join, but in today's brutal world they do not measure up to the personal risks involved.

Subject: Thank You For Your Courage
Hello, I am from Portland, Oregon, and I am a friend of [one of those arrested Friday at the Marines station]. I want to thank you and commend you for your courage in standing strong against allowing recruiting in your city. We could just lose our beautiful nation if we don't wake up to the injustices that are happening in the name of freedom. I can't beleive that any pre-emptive war is moral, and the one in Iraq, in my opionion, was only instigated in order to establish a permanent foothold in the middle east and perhaps obtain access to their oil. The administration and the military have gone against most of the rest of the world and have broken the terms of the Geneva Convention. Until we abandon this imperialist mentality and clean up our own doorstep at home, we will continue to be at risk. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
When the power of love surpasses the love of power, then shall we know peace...

I am writing this letter of support on behalf of both myself and my family who are wholeheartedly in support of and strongly urge the the Council not to reject, their decision to ban military recruiters engaging in coercive or manipulatory tactics from their campus. I hope none of their members will succumb to intimidation. It is depressing that this country has come to this. While it is nothing new that often purely on whim, persons engaged in competent civil nonviolent resistance, are harangued or worse, these last several years have been by far, the worst. A family member of mine is in public ed and this, likely, is not what she would want the next generation to learn. The protesters were doing nothing conduct wise, illegal, that warranted, in my opinion, either their arrest, or the specifics, thereof. This is not now so much about impeachment as it is about whether or not the highest to lowest levels of government at at all sectors should be held accountable. I hope the council will stay with its original position.
Sincerely, XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

It's nice to know that there is one city in America who is unafraid to take a stand to prevent innocent Americans from joining the military. Thank you Berkeley City Council for leading the way with your practical activism. In this day and age there is no reason to pit the young people of one country against the young people of another country for political purposes. If only we would all take a stand around the world, this could be stopped and peace would prevail. Good luck with your efforts!

I only wish there were more like you all over the country. It's obvious that the first requirement of waging any war is to recruit bodies to fight it. One of the most thought inspiring questions that had ocurred to me during my stint in the military (during the mid sixties) was "What if they had a war, and nobody came?" I commend you for taking the action you have. God bless you. For the short duration you have already interfered with recruitment, some young person's life may have been saved, some family might have been spared the horror of the military call to inform them of a loved one killed, maimed or missing in action. You never know, some other cities may opt to follow your lead and it may just be the begining of a national peace movement - something long overdue in this country. We can dream, we can pray. You have collectively gone beyond that, you have acted. As a patriotic citizen I say "THANKS TO ALL OF YOU".... I hope your ideas and actions catch on. Bless You, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
If it weren't for the Iraq war, there would be no need for such a place.
It is entirely appropriate for Berkeley to reflect its citizens' opposition to the war in this manner.

To all those concerned;
I wanted to take time out to voice my support of the recent protest at the Marines Shattuck Square recruiting station. The act of sending a wall of police in riot gear to remove them was nothing short of despicable, and certainly unpatriotic. I hope your office(s) take steps to make sure our right as American’s to protest is NEVER trampled on again. If you don’t do everything in your power to ensure this basic right, it will only lead to your children also loosing their rights as American’s. Please don’t let that happen. America needs your help.
Thank you for your time.

To Whom it may concern; especially Mayor Tom Bates* and Councilman Max Anderson. et al.:
Apropos of recent demonstrations by "Code PINK", and your "World Can't Wait"; I "can't wait", either, and I have discovered the peacable, legal ammunition, by which the U.S. Marines' office could be routed out of Berkeley, and every other state of these United States of America.
Below are two of the most relevant sections of the United States Codes (which are often written in Code). See their texts, below: The first one (Title 4 U.S. Code, Section 72.), makes clear that such "offices" as
the Marines now unlawfully occupy (just as in Iraq!), must be in "D.C."; i.e., a Federal Area, unless there is a written "Delegation of Authority" letter. And... the Marines (and doubtless, others), have none. The second one (Title 10, Section 503.), additionally makes clear that such "offices" as the Marines now occupy, can only be used for (quote): "advertising and market research targeted at prospective recruits for the armed forces". Their very presence, in a Union state, is a LIE!
Please read, carefully, what I have tried to bring to the attention of Berkeley's
"activists", who are led by the nose by federalized "attorneys".** Sincerely, ArthurStopes, III. Director; Center for Unalienable Rights Education (C.U.R.E.). Telephone: 510 / 548 - 5238.
* Mayor Bates: Your "Acting Attorney" cannot PROVE he has a "License" to practice law, pursuant to the Business and Professions Code, at Section 6067. Therefore, read very carefully the U.S. Codes, above. The "Code PINK" N.L.G. "attorney", Sharon Adams, was forwarded the e-mail dated "Sun, 04 Nov 2007" (see below), but said she doesn't "agree" to it. I have presented the law. To WHAT, then, does she not agree? You ask her, as she (and doubtless your Actor Attorney), dare not reveal the LIMITS of federal authority, and your City Manager can't decode it.
** What most people do not comprehend, is that "State" and "United States" mean (in federal law), a Territory and the District of Columbia. That is WHY there are federal drug convictions; and "attorneys" would normally be sanctioned, if they reveal what - and where - the "U.S.", is!

Re: "Marines have Landed in Berkeley and opened a Military Recruiting Station! NO Military Predators in OUR Town!"
Dear CodePINK members and supporters:
I read in The Berkeley Daily Planet of your groups' concern about the U.S. Marines' Officer Recruiting Center, at Berkeley, California. Although Letters to the Editor, posters, marches, and rallys will serve to bring attention to the presence of that institution's office, I suspect that they will have no more impact upon the questionable "conscience" of the Marines, than stones thrown by children at marauding tanks.
Therefore, I have a positive suggestion. It could result in the legally required departure of that and other U.S. military recruiting centers. You may be intrigued to learn that the laws of the federal government are in your favor - if you have the courage and diligence to apply them.
Consider this very clear dictate, regarding the lawful location of federal (U.S.) offices, as can be found in the United States Codes:
TITLE 4 - FLAG AND SEAL, SEAT OF GOVERNMENT, AND THE STATES /
CHAPTER 3 - SEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT Sec. 72. Public offices; at seat of Government All offices attached to the seat of government shall be exercised in the District of Columbia, and not elsewhere, except as otherwise expressly provided by law. [Underlines added.]
And, also this:
TITLE 10 - ARMED FORCES / Sub
